Thermal Desorption and Thermal Extraction

The Gerstel TD 3.5+ system is a flexible solution for thermal desorption and thermal extraction applications. 
The desorber stands out for its complete temperature control and compact design, with no cold or hot spots along the sample path: it fits on the GC without the need for additional bench space and is perfectly suited for the analysis of gaseous, liquid and solid samples.
It can be combined with additional Gerstel modules, allowing the application of multiple extraction techniques including:

  • Thermal desorption of standard 3.5" TD tubes for air sampling
  • Dynamic Headspace (DHS 3.5+) based on headspace vials
  • DHS 3.5+ Large based on sample vessels up to 1 L
  • Direct thermal extraction of solids housed in a TD tube complete with frit
  • Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE, GERSTEL Twister®)
  • Thermal extraction of liquids in μ-vials inside TD tubes.

The operation of the TD 3.5+ desorber can be automated by the MultiPurposeSampler MPS platform. 
The entire system is controlled via MAESTRO software. 
The combination of the CIS injector and the TD 3.5+ desorption unit, offers great application flexibility.
The absence of the transfer line allows to range from the analysis of volatile compounds to the analysis of heavier compounds, without the risk of contamination between samples. Operating principle:

The TD 3.5+ thermodesorber is installed directly above the Cooled Injection System (CIS) injector, a universal PTV injector for GC.  
The connection between the desorber and the injector is direct, liner-in-liner technology, without the aid of transfer lines, for an efficient transfer without the risk of contamination between the analysis of one sample and another. 
During the desorption phase the injector is kept cold, only when desorption is completed is the injector quickly heated, for the narrow-band transfer of the analytes on the column.
